If I had a daughter…

If I had a daughter

If I had a daughter

she’d have brown hair

like yours

and something to imagine

a mystery about her always

that others mistake

as a precocious verve

she’ll know the pen

and she’ll read books

and look at them as kites

floating somewhere like a revelation

or a rebellion in blood

she’ll make ashtrays in art class

she’ll get a tattoo when she’s sixteen

she’ll worry and she’ll believe

she’ll nurture and she’ll strive

she’ll fall in love one day

that day I will be ready

for death or for redemption

softly, once

to the eyes that look just like her mother’s
